Coastal Inspiration in a Midwest Guesthouse

Bi-fold doors and coastal-design inspiration transform this Midwest guesthouse.

This guest house in Indiana takes inspiration from its owner’s California roots.

Contemporary in style with notes of coastal influence, this light and airy guesthouse blurs the line between inside and outside. That is a result of the two eye-catching Marvin Signature Ultimate Bi-Fold Doors, which harness air, light, and verdant backyard views. Belonging to lifestyle blogger, Erin Loechner, the guesthouse takes well-being and comfort to another level. Guests who are fortunate enough to stay in the space enjoy a meditative and open, transitional-style living room with Ultimate Bi-Fold doors on two sides. When they open, accordion-style, the interior seamlessly connects with the outdoors.

“Marvin’s bi-fold doors made it possible to harness the breeziness of our former Los Angeles home and channel it into a wide-open setting with plenty of room to roam,” Loechner said.

The guesthouse is right off the primary home’s deck, revealing the design foresight that one day Loechner might want it to be fully integrated into the existing outdoor space. “Bi-fold doors offered the flexibility we wanted,” she said. “When opened, the house becomes an extension of our deck seating for dinner parties and backyard BBQs, and when closed, it’s transformed into a private retreat for guests who want to visit long-term. When we’re not hosting faraway friends and family, it’s been the perfect everyday way to bring a bit more of the outdoors in.”
