Jesse Bodine, Co-Founder and Chief Creative Officer, Scout & Nimble: Our homes should be a reflection of us. This house I really built and designed off of my experience as a child and my family's home, and I was just thinking through the memories. I wanted to recreate that here.
Tim Davis, Senior Brand Ambassador, Marvin Brand Experience Center: I see that in the kitchen space that we're in right now, you use a different finish for the island, for the cabinets everywhere. Tell me about the aesthetic choices.
Bodine: I am all about homes really being functional, and the kitchen is the heart of the home. So, having a space that can expand when you're hosting and entertaining people and really being able to just live life. And that was kind of the starting point for bringing that soft, creamy white throughout, but bringing in a little contrast with the stained island. And then going with the green in the scullery, just for a little pop.
Davis: I see a lot of pattern and a lot of different colors. Are there any design rules that you just throw out the window?
Bodine: I love to break design rules, and I think doing the unexpected is really fun. We love to mix metals, so we have the polished nickel and the unlacquered brass in here, and I think that just adds interest. I really wanted to create a classic, timeless home, and people would walk in and go, "When was this built?" They wouldn't really be able to tell.
Davis: You have a lot of windows in here. I see that the front has the simulated divided light pattern, but when we look at the back of the house, you've actually removed everything. What were your design considerations in choosing those?
Bodine: The architecture of this home is heavily designed on those windows. That's why I love the Ultimate Collection. It offered the architectural interest of the SDLs on the front. Those are so beautiful in how they let light in, and then the views out the back of this house are really gorgeous. And so really I wanted unobstructed views.
There are so many customization options with windows and doors from hardware to color. How do you walk somebody through that process?
Davis: So when people are thinking about windows and doors, I always ask, "How are you going to live in this space, and what is the design intentionality of that room?" What a lot of people don't know is their options. Do you actually operate your windows? How much airflow do you need? What are you actually going to do in that space? We're always asking all of these questions, and then I'm just presenting as many possibilities as I can, and we really feel honored to be a valued partner in that.
As we all know, it takes a lot of partners to build a house. How do you collaborate with your teams?
Bodine: I get to work with so many skilled artisans, present them with my vision, and then they often layer in their wisdom, their expertise. So in the end you get this like amazing piece of art that so many hands touched, and it's so much bigger than just us.
