Bright New Outlook for a California Zoo
Custom-Color Windows and Doors Set the Stage for Family Fun
The Happy Hollow Park & Zoo in San Jose, California, has been a Bay Area family favorite since opening its gates in 1961, providing rides, play areas and an accredited zoo with over 150 animals—from endangered lemurs to miniature horses.
When it came time for an A-to-Z renovation, Marvin worked with The Portico Group and Thompson Builders to bring a colorful new appearance to this family entertainment destination with the installation of several custom-color windows and doors.
Today, welcoming every zoo guest is an airy, bright visitor center featuring Ultimate Bi-Fold Doors in a three-panel configuration from the Marvin Signature Collection, topped with light-filled fixed awnings. The oversized door panels fold back to open the center’s space to the warm California weather, creating a gazebo effect throughout. A bright lime-green clad color was custom-created and applied to all of the windows and doors, contributing to the contemporary structure’s playful, energetic atmosphere.
Happy Hollow was the first certified LEED® Gold zoo and amusement park in the country. Additionally, along with the bi-fold doors with ADA sills, both single and double ADA-compliant commercial doors were required throughout the renovation. Given the broad range of window and door needs, Marvin’s custom capabilities made them the perfect partner for the project.
A new education building features bi-fold doors to provide an inspiring space that connects to the zoo’s natural surroundings. Easy-to-use double hung, full circle round tops, state-of-the-art glider and expansive Ultimate Venting Picture windows were used throughout the project to continue the connection to the outdoors.
In all, four unique custom colors were created to match the project’s vibrant palette: Parakeet, Dewberry, Peppery and Marigold. Marvin’s standard Bronze color was also used as a near-match to the requested Van Dyke Brown. The result is a bright and cheery welcome that sets the stage for a day of family fun at the park.
