“The home is well anchored within the landscape,” said builder Allan Pettit, “and was thoughtfully situated so it feels very close to the natural landscape.”
Aiding in the connections? The project’s Marvin Ultimate windows and doors. Dixon described how the home is quite literally defined by them:
Every single room has a special moment where the windows and doors blur the boundary between inside and out.”
Julie Dixon
Architect
Dixon was especially excited to share that many of the project’s windows are operable, meaning the natural world is that much closer.
“You can sleep while listening to the creeks running on either side of the house or to the birds surrounding you,” Dixon explained. “This really is a sanctuary and the sounds of the outdoors and feel of that breeze is special.”
In the end, the 2025 house beautifully achieves what Dixon set out for the home: “[The goal of] this year’s Idea House was a richly detailed house that conveys a sense of permanence and calm.”
All with the help of a couple of babbling brooks and windows open to the natural world, of course.
