Between a Rock and a Hard Place -- Literally!

By Marvin Windows February 27, 2014

rock house

That headline is no joke — and how could we resist? This AIA award-winning home is literally carved into the rocks in the San Juan Islands in Puget Sound near Seattle. Tom Kundig, FAIA, of Olson Kundig Architects in Seattle is the designer.

Setting the house into the rock required heavy-duty excavation, including dynamite. The rock protrudes into the space throughout the home, providing a natural contrast to the finished surfaces of the furnishings. Fireplace hearths are carved out of existing stone, as is a main-level powder room.

And needless to say, the home offers gorgeous views of the sea and the surrounding landscape.
