This project involved updating and reconfiguring a 1906 stucco-clad Victorian in San Francisco. The charge was to transform a dark and confining old house into an open and bright home. The result is a successful blend of traditional and modern styling and a well-functioning and environmentally-sensitive family house.
The owners hoped for a light-filled house that would be as eco-friendly as possible. To achieve these goals, the living areas were placed on the top floor where the light would be best. Most of the walls there were removed and a roof top garden replaced a large portion of the rear top floor. Environmental features were incorporated from the start. They included, among others: a solar-powered radiant heat system and a large photo-voltaic roof array for the house’s electrical needs, double-paned windows, and recycled materials for insulation, the floors, cabinets and countertops. The building siting allowed for the addition of numerous large windows along the length of the house. Window seats and other window features add to the house’s charm.
