Architect Name: Robert Gurney, FAIA
Contractor: Added Dimensions, Inc.
Location: Washington, DC
This project began with a typical post-WWII developer spec house in an established neighborhood. Redesign goals included modern lines and contemporary living spaces, a more open feel, and light-filled rooms. Along with redesigned window configurations in existing elevations, new spaces were added – an expanded entry, a large, screened porch, and a glass-walled office at tree-top height. Floor to ceiling windows were installed wherever possible to reintroduce light into previously dark rooms, and to minimize the impact of 8’ ceilings. Marvin Ultimate Casement windows, direct glaze fixed windows and Ultimate Swinging French Doors were used.

Alvhem means “river home” in Swedish, and the name reflects the homeowner’s family heritage. As the name implies, this house is located on a partially wooded bluff overlooking a river. The homeowner had a clear vision for this site, requesting a modern house designed around a simple, shed roof form. Few windows are visible from the street. Riverside, however, one encounters a dramatic wall of windows and panoramic views. Marvin Technical Services provided the engineering necessary to structure such a large expanse of multiple window units. Tempered glass adds security and peace of mind in a location occasionally threatened with adverse weather conditions and potential debris from nearby trees.
Architect Name: Dan Feidt
Firm: Dan Feidt Studio
Location: Excelsior, MN
A mid-century, lakeside home was the subject of a down-to-the-studs remodel. Homeowners
yearned for a more open floor plan, spectacular views of the waterfront, more light, and dramatically improved energy efficiency. The architect came up with a unique solution; he inverted the roofline to create two large butterfly dormers – one a two-story wall of windows facing the lake, the other a striking entry. Remotely operable windows over the front entry and pennant windows on the sides of the dormers bring in additional light, ventilation and treetop views. Many operation styles of Marvin windows and doors were incorporated, and efficiencies include a guest wing that can be shut down when not in use. The award-winning project has gained local recognition for its innovative design and superb energy efficiency.
