Case Study: Smith College restores traditional look with Marvin Windows

Smith College in Northampton, Mass. is a private liberal arts college for women, deeply rooted in tradition. Part of the tradition is the historical roots of the campus, which contains many buildings that are over 100 years old.

In 2011, Smith College needed to undertake a large restoration process, renovating four of its oldest dormitories. The renovation projects included the restoration of the Gillett and Northrop Houses. These four-and-a-half story buildings, built in 1911, are covered in ivy and sit on the main entrance to the campus.

The challenge the educational institution faced was it needed to upgrade the facilities to increase the energy efficiency of the buildings, while matching their original appearances. To do this, Smith turned to Marvin Windows for the answer.

The college chose to use Marvin Clad Insert Double Hung Windows for the project. The flexibility of Marvin’s manufacturing allowed Smith the ability to customize the casings and snap trim in order to replicate the original windows. In addition, the fact that Marvin is a market leader in energy efficient windows and doors made it an easy fit for the college.
