FAQ Knowledge Articles

The International Residential Code (IRC) requires egress windows in single and multi-family homes. “Egress” is a means of escape. It is important for two reasons. The first is to have an exit in an emergency. The second is to allow a firefighter access into the home.

As it relates to the windows, there are certain requirements. They are:
  • The minimum opening area of the egress window is 5.7 square feet.
  • The minimum egress window opening is 24” high.
  • The minimum egress window opening is 20” wide.
Marvin, Integrity and Infinity have products that meet the egress standards at some sizes. These products include Casements, Double Hungs, Single Hungs, Gliders and Tilt Turns.

Be sure to check with your local building codes and inspectors for local requirements.

Egress information on Marvin windows are found in each product’s Architectural Detail Manual (ADM) and also covered in individual product egress knowledge articles.
