Totally radical decorating trends from the 80s

The 80s. If you lived through them, you remember all the crazy fashions like Day-Glo, acid-washed jeans and some serious shoulder pads. But what about all the home decor styles? House Beautiful had a very amusing roundup of popular decorating trends during the Me Decade. Surprisingly, there are a few we like — along with some that look terribly, well, 80s.

The coppery color of Verdigris might have been a big 80s trend, but we still love it now! It can make any home and garden area look nicely lush.

Open Kitchen

This isn’t the best picture of it, but as House Beautiful points out, the open kitchen plan really took off in the 80s. We’d say that’s the decade’s greatest contribution to home design. A free-flowing kitchen plan is still featured in many, if not most, homes being built today.

Chintz is best in small doses. The 80s way of covering the room in the floral pattern makes it look like a bit of a Laura Ashley-esque nightmare.

Memphis Design

According to House Beautiful, this is called Memphis design: ”Popular designs by Memphis Milano inspired bright looks and bold geometric patterns. Rooms with neon colors and abstract art were the norm in the 1980s, such as in this Houston condominium from our September 1980 issue.” Oh, dear. This just looks incredibly dated, although we do love the pops of color.

What were your favorite decorating trends from the 80s?
