Simple steps for a safe, cozy home in 2013

For those lucky enough to enjoy a few extra days off during the holidays, the extra time makes for a perfect opportunity to check your home for everyday safety and upkeep. Life is hectic most of the year, making it all too easy to overlook the never-ending list of maintenance needs. Take a few hours out of your end-of-the-year routine and you just might add a few years of life to your home, making it safer and more enjoyable for those who occupy it.

Before 2013 arrives, here’s a list of very simple (but necessary) steps you can take to keep your home safe and cozy for the year ahead.

  1. Change the batteries in smoke detectors. Funny how smoke detectors so often wait until the middle of the night to warm you their batteries are dying. Save yourself from the rude awakening and buy AA batteries in bulk.
  2. Install an attic door blanket. This is a huge energy saver year round. During the summer, the heat from a warm attic can leak into your home. Even worse, warm air can be lost in the winter by working its way up and through the cracks leading to your ceiling. Set up is simple and the blanket pays for itself in no time.
  3. Change your furnace air filters. Mark your calendar and change filters once every two months. This will noticeably improve the air quality in your home, especially if you or someone in your family has allergies. And while you’re at it, buy six filters to last the year and keep them next to your furnace to help avoid future procrastination.
  4. Install carbon monoxide detectors. Install at least one on every floor, and if possible, near areas that use natural gas. These detectors have become a common feature in new homes, but homeowners occupying more seasoned properties would be wise to install immediately. Older homes are more susceptible.

For all the time we’re lucky to spend at home this time of the year, it’s worth the extra effort to ensure all of the little chores that keep it safe and cozy are tended to, keeping your home ready for the year ahead.
