Reclaimed stone and wood help ground-up renovation retain historic character

With limestone that was saved from a demolished bridge and shingles repurposed from an old church, this cottage retains a strong historic character despite having essentially been rebuilt from the ground up. Featured recently on TrendsIdeas.com, the home stays true to an older design and build approach in all but one way:

One way that the modest cottage does concede to contemporary times is through the open-plan layout.
Not only was the existing cabin in poor shape, it had also suffered from cramped rooms, low ceilings, no fireplace and a claustrophobic air. Removing most walls to create one large living-dining-kitchen space and having the bedroom in the short side of the L addressed this.

On the home’s exterior, one of the only new materials is the window frames. The home features windows from Marvin, which were painted to achieve an aged, weathered feel. Ultimately, the owner was left with a new home that didn’t look new but was still supremely livable, considering it’s small original footprint.
