If we made furniture, it might look like this

We love the modern rustic furniture of St. Paul, Minn., craftsman Scott McGlasson. His pieces are great examples of classic design with an unexpected twist.

But as we got to know McGlasson’s work, we started to feel even more of a kinship with him. McGlasson creates each piece by hand, often using wood harvested from the “urban forest” of the Twin Cities — trees that have fallen victim to storm, blight, or construction projects.

His work displays a blend of beauty, fine craftsmanship and innovation — exactly the qualities we build into every Marvin window. McGlasson practices “nose to tail” woodworking, wasting nothing. He heats his sauna with wood chips and sends his shavings to local chicken coops or pottery kilns.

That’s exactly how we do it in our main factory in Warroad, Minn. We heat with sawdust. Our shavings go to local turkey farms. We cut each slab of raw wood to yield the maximum number of finished pieces. And we create finger-jointed assemblies from smaller pieces that are actually stronger than one large, single-cut piece.

We’d love to see a room featuring Marvin windows and McGlasson furniture. Can anyone out there point us to an example?
