Fenestration and Home Design

curb appeal home

“Fenestration” is a fancy word for windows and doors, derived from “fenestra,” the Latin word for window. It’s a term often used by architects, builders and designers to describe the overall plan for windows and doors in a home. And it’s an incredibly important piece of what makes a home look good and function well.

Curb appeal is a key factor in what makes a home sell. And windows and doors are one of the most important contributors to curb appeal. Windows also are critical to a home’s overall energy efficiency. In fact, the U.S. Department of Energy says that energy-efficient windows will eventually pay for themselves in reduced heating, cooling and even lighting costs.

In 2013, Remodeling magazine’s influential cost-value survey once again ranked wood window replacement as one of the top five most cost-effective home improvements — meaning a homeowner could expect to recover a high percentage of the project cost if they ever sold their house.

These dollars-and-cents measurements don’t even touch on one of the main things we hear from homeowners: that well-designed, high-quality windows make their home lighter, brighter, more comfortable and a joy to live in. And you can’t put a price on that.
