Establishing privacy when adding wing to existing homes a critical point of emphasis

Any homeowner can imagine what a new wing on their house would look like, from each new room’s design and functionality to the overall look and feel to how it blends with the existing structure. But one of the most overlooked facets of any addition is how the space will impact outdoor views from existing rooms. Will outward sight lines be interrupted by the new structure?

Robert Ross AIA of Ross Design (Atlanta, Ga.) had plenty to consider when adding a wing to an existing one-level ranch-style home.

“As seen from above, the staggered, spiral shape of the wing was dictated by a need to optimize key outlooks from each room and to ensure the mass of the master bedroom was not on show to the adjacent dining room,” Ross said.
