2012 WINNERS
Family Retreat
Tyringham, Massachusetts
Stunning wetlands, family escape.
Located in the valley of a remotely forested
500-acre site, this family retreat renovation
retained the rustic character of the house and
backdrop, which includes the remnants of a
19th century barn structure, while integrating
additional spaces and improving the quality
and comfort of the residence.
Inspired by the site’s natural features, local stone, cedar shingles and standing seam metal
roofs lend a “village” feel to the new compound. The building elements resemble a
typical evolving New England farmhouse expansion. Steep rolling hills, a flowing brook,
and a dam and pond were maintained and seamlessly incorporated in the new development.
To enhance views and green space, the existing driveway was rerouted, with retaining
walls built with large boulders from the site.
Marvin windows had the perfect scale and
detail needed to complement the design and
work with the existing natural building
materials. The black clad exteriors were a
perfect addition to the fieldstone, cedar
shingles and standing seam metal roofs, while
the interior Douglas fir highlighted the interior
space.
