Project Type: Remodel
This scenic lakeside home is a remodel of a 1960s walkout. The builders, who are also the homeowners, had two simple goals for the design: create a magnificent view of the lake, and improve energy efficiency. They began the remodel by inverting the roofline with two large butterfly dormers, creating a two-story wall of windows facing the lake in back. Remotely operable windows were installed over the front entry, and pennant windows were added to the sides of the dormers to bring in additional light and treetop views. The floor plan was opened up to maximize the public areas and improve flow for entertaining. Two small additions were also built for a new study and screened porch, both with expansive lake views. Marvin products allowed the homeowners to meet their design and energy goals while keeping the build on schedule and within budget. The finished home was a tremendous success, winning a Twin Cities RAVE award for excellence in residential design, as well as a Minnesota GreenPath award for energy efficiency, indoor air quality, resource management, water management, and site development.
