Marvin Windows and Doors Takes Action to Fill Skilled Labor Gap

Internal programs and national philanthropic campaigns are cornerstones of effort

WARROAD, Minn. – Jan 10, 2017 – At a time when an estimated 3.1 million skilled labor jobs are going unfilled,[1] Marvin Windows and Doors announces its participation as a charter sponsor of Generation Next, a philanthropic campaign from This Old House that will encourage and empower young people to join the skilled trades. Marvin will participate in a campaign kickoff reception at this year’s Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS) in “The Backyard” on January 11 from 4:30-6:30 p.m., where an initial donation will be presented to the mikeroweWORKS Foundation’s Work Ethic Scholarship Program.

“We’re facing an unprecedented shortage in skilled trade talent in this country, and it’s notably affecting the potential success of the building industry,” said Marvin Windows and Doors Vice President of Marketing Brett Boyum. “We believe that there’s an incredible pool of talent out there, that if nurtured properly, can be the new face of skilled trades. By focusing on training, mentoring and scholarships through initiatives like Generation Next, we can collaborate with other leaders to help close the gap.”

The charter sponsorship of Generation Next is the latest in a series of efforts, including numerous internal Marvin training programs that emphasize apprenticeship, manufacturing foundations and cross-functional certifications in cutting-edge areas like mechatronics. As manufacturing machinery continues to advance, investing in mechatronics and other advanced training means a more skilled workforce and a welcomed challenge for employees.

When it comes to changing perceptions about vocational careers, reaching young people early is key. In conjunction with the Minnesota Innovation Institute, Marvin is actively developing a pre-apprenticeship program, working with local schools to begin training students before graduation, and offering a head-start on training programs that can be completed in the workforce after graduation.

“As manufacturing changes, we have to change with it,” said Peggy Anderholm, manager of education and workforce development at Marvin Windows and Doors. “To date, more than 350 of our employees have graduated from four-year, two-year, diploma or certificate programs to help them become more well-rounded and technically educated tradespeople. Not only do our employees feel pride after graduating, but they’ve secured knowledge they’ll carry with them for the remainder of their careers.”
