A Prefab Oasis in Palm Springs

November 2016 issue

Longtime architectural partners Dwell and Turkel Design are launching a new project in a mecca for midcentury modernism – Palm Springs. The Dwell Prefab Palm Springs by Turkel Design both encapsulates the architecture of the region and provides a fresh take on its iconic attributes. The 2000-square-foot prefab is a courtyard home that opens to views of the sprawling San Jacinto mountain range while enjoying its own private pool-side oasis. Indebted to the balmy climate, the open plan enables a fluid interplay between indoors and outdoors.

For architect Joel Turkel, the city has special meaning: “There’s a long history of prefab architecture in Palm Springs which dates back to the ’30s and through every era. It’s a great place where a home of this nature is part of the architectural and lifestyle culture – there’s a certain vernacular we’re tying into.”

In a showcase of modern innovation, our brand partners Marvin Windows & Doors, Resource Furniture and The Modern Fan Company will outfit the space. Solutions like Marvin’s Ultimate Lift and Slide Door further the home’s goal of melding together interior and exterior space; an operable window at a window seat allows guests to take a perch by the breeze. With its multi-functional and transforming furniture, Resource Furniture allows the prefab to be creative and adaptable in its use of space. The Modern Fan Company, which has launched a new collaboration with Brazilian designer Guto Indio da Costa, will equip the residence with svelte ceiling fans – key for days when heat is blaring in Coachella Valley.

“The people and projects we’re working with really understand that we’re trying to take advantage of the climate, maximize the space, and introduce new products with a keen eye for simple signatures and visually minimal features,” says Turkel. An elegant expression of modern design principles, the home will provide the perfect backdrop for upcoming Dwell influencer events.
