What's the 2014 Color of the Year?

At Marvin, we love color! So we waited with bated breath for the official announcement of the Pantone Color of the Year for 2014. After two years of strong, bright colors (Tangerine Tango in 2012 and Emerald in 2013), 2014′s color is a bit more refreshing: Radiant Orchid.
It’s not a bold purple, nor is it a pastel lavender. It’s cheerful without being forceful and seems to have a hint of pink. According to Pantone:
“While the 2013 color of the year, PANTONE 17-5641 Emerald, served as a symbol of growth, renewal and prosperity, Radiant Orchid reaches across the color wheel to intrigue the eye and spark the imagination,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “An invitation to innovation, Radiant Orchid encourages expanded creativity and originality, which is increasingly valued in today’s society.”
There’s lots of places you could use Radiant Orchid in your home. It would be great as an accent color (we’re picturing a tufted velvet chair) or as a paint color. It would work particularly well for a bedroom since it’s so calming.
What do you think of Radiant Orchid? Are you surprised that Pantone went for such a soft, almost feminine color after two years of brights?
