Architects Challenge: The Loretta Building

By Marvin Windows September 3, 2015

We’ve shown you some beautiful homes from the Architects Challenge so far, but good architecture goes beyond houses. Beautifully designed commercial projects can change the look and feel of a street, neighborhood or city. We were proud to honor one such commercial project in the Architects Challenge.

Situated on Broadway Street in downtown Fargo, North Dakota, the Loretta Building was once an easily overlooked remnant of days gone by. Now, 100 years after its original construction, the building has become one of the downtown area’s most vibrant centers of commerce. By using new materials and some existing resources in the renovation, the designers were able to combine the character of yesterday with furnishings that suit modern tastes. Marvin products were helpful in this process. The windows recreated the original character with a more efficient design that improved air filtration, reduced heat loss, and increased energy savings. The Loretta Building has become a pillar of historic Broadway Street, which is why it was named the Best Commercial project in this year’s Architects Challenge.

Designed by Lee Dobrinz of JLG Architects, one judge had this to say about the Loretta Building: ““A crisp and sophisticated reuse of a handsome mercantile building. I appreciated the metamorphosis to a clean modern aesthetic while restoring and respecting the original structure.” We agree!
