It’s Environmental Awareness Month, and we’re thinking green.

Reducing one’s carbon footprint starts at home. Whether selecting a green cleaner or picking out new environmentally sound furniture, your choices make a difference. In celebration of Earth Month, we’ve gathered some of our favorite products and brands that will help you kick-start a sustainable lifestyle.

Green cleaning

Traditionally, household cleaners are harsh on both the body and environment. Enter J.R. Watkins Home Care products, anything but traditional. This Minnesota-based company has been dedicated to making hard-working products from high-quality natural ingredients for more than 100 years. We especially love their Lemon All-Purpose Cleaner and Grapefruit Dish Soap.

Awesome appliances

Appliances have the tendency to use a good deal of energy. If you’re looking for ways to improve your ecological footprint, you may consider upgrading your fridge, dishwasher, or washer and dryer. Typically new appliances use less energy than their older counterparts, but a good rule of thumb is to look for ENERGY STAR certified products. Here are a few brands that are outperforming the rest:

• Refrigerator – Fisher & Paykel
• Dishwasher – Asko
• Washer – Speed Queen
• Dryer – LG

Smart décor

Looking to refurnish? In an effort to be more environmentally conscious while reducing their carbon footprint, retailers such as Pottery Barn and Crate and Barrel have made the responsible use of raw materials a priority. Many of their products, ranging from barstools and bookcases to coffee tables and sink counsels, have been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Whatever your furniture needs, there’s a contemporary, green, solution.

Bambeco is another company that is passionate about products with a purpose. They deliver a collection of exquisite, high-quality products and artisan creations – all of which are reclaimed, repurposed, renewable, recycled, natural or organic. They’ve also made an effort to practice what they preach by using minimal packaging made from recycled materials and working with select shipping carriers that offer greener options. Although they have a vast selection, some of are favorites are the colorful Huntington Spree Reclaimed Wood Wall Clock, the rustic Reclaimed Weathered Coastal Wood Frame, and the beautiful Recycled Metal and Glass Hanging Chandelier.

Woodsport, located in Saint Paul, Minnesota, is a unique woodcraft studio that harvests much of their lumber from trees that fell victim to storms, blight or construction projects. Traditional techniques mixed with an experimental approach result in original, heirloom quality furniture and accessory pieces perfect for almost every setting. We wouldn’t mind lounging in one of their Chaise chairs or sitting down to brunch at the Abner table.
