Lake Living in Wayzata: Luxury and Artisan Home ToursBy Berit Griffin, Marvin Windows
In the Twin Cities, we are lucky enough to have two great home tours going on! The Luxury Home Tour and the Artisan Home Tour both allow us to get a peek inside some pretty gorgeous homes and get ideas for our own projects.
Last week we visited the lovely lakeside town of Wayzata. Two homes on the Luxury Home Tour and one from the Artisan Home Tour were in the Locust Hills neighborhood, on the shores of Lake Minnetonka. This quiet development offers a blend of old and new houses and lots of recreational opportunity with the lake close by.
First up on the tour: a home built by Stonewood, LLC. This traditional-style home was just built. The vintage-looking beams may tell a different story, but don’t let that fool you. Stonewood spent many hours hand-distressing them to tell the home’s story. The Stonewood house was built for a couple who are empty nesters. They needed space for the grandkids to come visit but also envisioned an adult house that could work with their hobbies: there’s an extensive craft room AND a golf simulator in the basement.
As you enter into the home’s great room, you see a wall of large Marvin picture and round top windows open to the backyard. The traditional look continues with Ultimate Casements with a simulated checkrail. The builders chose to use this window both for egress and ease. For instance, with a deep kitchen counter, a double hung over the sink would have meant climbing up on the counter to open it, but a casement can easily be cranked.
The next Luxury Home Tour stop was a contemporary home from John Kraemer & Sons. With Lake Minnetonka glittering in the distance, this home’s wide open feel and beautiful outdoor spaces make it perfect for entertaining. Blonde woods and clean lines are notable features of this home. The layout is especially interesting with the living area on the main floor and most bedrooms in the light-filled basement. Although the house is 5,000 square feet, it never feels ostentatious–as a matter of fact, the second floor consists of just one office space surrounded by our windows.
The Locust Hills home on the Artisan Home Tour had a spectacular location: right on Lake Minnetonka’s Grey’s Bay. With a yard leading right down to the dock, this Swanson Homes project is great for water-lovers, with swimming and boating right out the back door.
Swanson used Integrity Windows and Doors in this home–the large sizes available take advantage of the lake view! And when the the weather is cold and the lake isn’t quite as inviting? Well, there’s always the basketball court in the basement.
We’re visiting some more homes on both tours and can’t wait to share what we find in those! Tell us, if you were building a luxury home, what’s the one feature you would most want to have?
If you’re in the Twin Cities area, don’t forget to visit these two home tours–we’re sure you will be inspired!
