A new old home on the lakeBy Berit Griffin, Marvin Windows
We’re back on the Luxury Home Tour trail, and headed back out to one of the Twin Cities’ favorite lakes to see another gorgeous home. Located in Minnetrista, this home blends together historic tradition and modern convenience.
On Lake Minnetonka, this home is actually a re-build, but not a teardown. The former historic mansion was irreparably damaged by fire in 2010 and instead of starting from scratch and rebuilding an entirely new home, the new homeowners were determined to honor the home that once stood there. They engaged Nor-Son, Inc. to build a chateau-style home that sits comfortably on the water, as if it had been there for decades.
The house uses a variety of Marvin products to help it feel authentic, including Ultimate Casement and direct glaze windows. A large Ultimate Lift and Slide Door opens up to the stone patio, pool and gorgeous views of the lake. The door slides completely into the wall in a pocket configuration and utilizes a nearly invisible screen that comes down via remote control. It truly is the epitome of bringing the outdoors, in!
Despite the home’s size, it feels humanly-scaled, and is designed with wings that don’t immediately make it apparent upon entering that this home is very generously sized. A palette of cool grays are used throughout the decor make the first floor a calming, cohesive place.
The home also has a very unique basement featuring not only a home gym, but a massage room–perfect for loosening muscles after working out. A 600-year-old Venetian marble fountain that belonged to the original house sits next to the workout room, and the basement walls use the remaining brick from that house, offering that perfect mix of old and new.
This house has it all: country lakeside charm, beautiful design…and a place for a massage! Now that’s what we call living!
