A foul-mouthed newspaper editor scared Brian Pontolilo away from his first crack at journalism—a teenage reporter covering high school sports. Left with little ambition, his first attempt at college was equally short lived. But after a few years dabbling in the trades, including carpentry, landscaping and painting, Brian’s scorn faded and he eventually earned a degree in professional writing. Brian was Fine Homebuilding’s first editorial assistant and over the past 14 years his name has appeared in nine different positions the masthead, including as the magazine’s editorial director from 2012 to 2015, when he took a short break from publishing. Brian returned to FHB as Design editor in 2016.
Well-versed in new construction and remodeling; tools and materials; best practices in a variety of home building trades; architecture and home design, Brian has covered the housing industry from boom times to the down-turn of 2008 and is currently interested in the challenges faced by builders and architects and how the home building industry will look as the market continues to recover.
Still an avid do-it-yourselfer, Brian spends his weekends remodeling his own home in Northwest Connecticut.
