DAIRY UPDATE Elements of the dairy farm vernacular - the silo, gambrel roof, hayloft and more - were reinterpreted for the 21st century. Solar panels power the HRV system, and when the gain exceeds power consumption, the excess goes back to the grid.
SILO: REINTERPRETED The "silo" was reinterpreted to collect and exhaust hot air through automatic operating windows. Natural convection currents ventilate the house in the summer, eliminating the need for traditional air conditioning. During winter, the silo’s floor panels trap warmth in the house.
THINKING WINDOWS Many of the windows are placed to collect winter solar gain on stone floors. Because so many of the environmental aspects of the house depend on the control of light and ventilation, window quality and performance was essential.

WINDOW WISH LIST This is a project that demanded very specific windows. They had to be energy efficient glass in a custom blue tint to match the cladding. They had to fit within a precise budget and schedule and come from a vendor the contractor trusted.
ORGANIZING SPACE Natural wood trim and artfully designed paneling help create a warm interior, while vertical and horizontal planes define and organize the space as it rises to the atrium. Clerestory windows run 360 degrees around the top, providing views of sun and sky.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY The bank is heated and cooled by geothermal wells. What's more, windows and overhangs help lower the summer cooling load as well as the winter heating load - while maximizing natural light. In this way, the cost of occupying the building was greatly reduced.

Inventing a Story

LYRICAL SETTING This is a lively, lyrical setting for music-loving empty nesters who wanted plenty of room for entertaining. A curved window wall gives the living space a panoramic view of wetlands. These south-facing windows also provide excellent solar gain during long Minnesota winters.
WORLD & STORY This home contains "three worlds." A central social area is "their world," and then there are two upper worlds. "Her world" is a bright space ideal for reading and art. "His world" has a billiard table and cigar porch. Windows connect these upper worlds.
CURVED WALL The rhythm of the windows along the curve differs from the rhythm of the structural columns. In effect, the windows move past the columns, and the columns read against the windows. What's more, the windows themselves are of diverse dimensions.
