Recycling and Waste Reduction Efforts

Marvin has made recycling a big part of the company’s everyday life in many ways:

At Marvin, we know that reducing, reusing and recycling really do make a difference. We’re proud that our windows and doors are:

Reusable
Marvin products are built for enduring performance, so it is a great idea to reuse our windows and doors that are in good operating condition. Of course, proper removal, installation and code compliance are essential.

Recyclable
Marvin windows and doors are not designed to be taken apart easily, but when disassembled, the major components (wood, glass or aluminum) can be recycled. Our product packaging is also recyclable.

Repairable
We make it easy to maintain and repair our products by providing replacement glass, replacement sash, operating hardware and more.

Wood

  • Improved finger-jointing and edge gluing, along with additional research, have increased the amount of wood that can be used in finished products.
  • Approximately 12,000 tons of packaging and logging waste are recycled annually. It powers the boiler, heats the plant, saves energy and reduces landfill waste.
  • 14,000 tons of wood shavings are sold annually for animal bedding.

Cardboard and Paper

  • An estimated 350 tons of cardboard and 90 tons of paper are recycled yearly.

Plastic

  • Many types of plastic, including stretch wrap and shrink wrap, are recycled; approximately 120 tons per year.

Solvents and Paints

  • A carbon absorption process enables thousands of gallons of solvent from our wood preservation process to be recycled.
  • Waste paints are recycled through a licensed fuel blending operation.
  • Factory-priming and painting products keeps waste paints in the factory where they’ll be properly recycled.

Metal

  • Approximately 20 tons of scrap metal is sent for recycling monthly.

Aluminum

  • Over 900 tons of aluminum is recycled yearly.

Glass

  • Special on-site equipment is used for recycling glass.
  • Broken and scratched glass is shipped for use in other products.

Oil

  • Used oil and filters from trucks and machinery are shipped to recycling centers.

Tires

  • Old truck tires get second lives as remolded rubber, asphalt additives and fuel additives.

Employee Recycling

We are very proud of our employee recycling program. Through this volunteer program, 17,000 pop cans are recycled each week.  We also offer an on-site recycling receptacle for different types of glass, newspaper, plastic and aluminum/tin for all employees to bring their household items for recycling.
